Broche, brooch.

Este broche lo hice como prueba, cuando preparaba los broches de un intercambio,  una amiga lo vio y se enamoró. Por eso lo he llamado Macasé, porque mis hijos llamaban así a mi amiga cuando eran pequeños.

I´ve made this brooch like a prototipe for a brooch swap, a friend felt in love with it at first glance. That´s why I´ve called this design Macasé, because my children used to call her on that way when they were too small to say her name properly.

Materiales que vamos a necesitar (se ven todos en la foto):

  

• - Arcilla color hueso para la base y tres colores más que contrasten entre sí para hacer los dibujos
• - Cortadores de varios tamaños, los minicortadores son unos conectores de cables que nos dio Jana Roberts en un curso y que puedes encontrar en las ferreterías o aliexpress. Aquí puedes verlos mejor: http://artisan-bijoutier-createur.km-bijou.eu/#post80
• - cuchillas y estilete
• - buriles
• - papel de lija
• - pintura al óleo (en mi caso es siena tostado que mezclo con carmín)
• - cuenco para cocer
• - broche metálico

What are we going to use? (see the picture):

• - Polymer clay bone colour for the base and three colours well contrasted

• - round point stabilo
• - sand paper

Lo primero que vamos a hacer es acondicionar la arcilla y laminamos en un grosor medio, en mi caso, el número 3 de mi máquina Atlas.

A continuación marcamos el corazón grande sin llegar a cortar, porque el corte lo haremos a mano para que quede un borde desigual. Lo ponemos sobre el cuenco moldeando la silueta según nos guste y ya no lo moveremos hasta que esté horneado.

Use the heart cutter carefully, we don´t want to cut at all, just a little mark. Pull of the leftover gently to get uneven shape. Set it on the bowl and reshape as you like. We are going to bake it on the bowl.

     

También podemos trazar una silueta con el estilete sin llegar a cortar y proceder también a terminar el corte con la mano.

Así he hecho la segunda figura.

We can make another original piece. With the X-acto mark an aleatory shape without cutting completly and finish the cut by hand. I´ve used this method for the second piece.

Sobre el mismo cuenco, decoramos nuestras piezas según nos guste con los distintos cortadores y colores.Yo he combinado colores con texturas que he hecho con las cuchillas, bolitas que he agujereado con buriles de varios grosores, muescas con los minicortadores, huecos que he dejado vacíos y luego rellenaremos con otro color pero después de cocer, de este modo no quedan a ras de superficie, dando otro aspecto que contrastará más.

We are going to decorate the pieces on the bowl as we like with different cutters and colours. Combining textures, shapes and shades made with the blades, balls reshaped with the stabilos, marks with the minicutters, holes to be refilled after baking, so on.

 

No hay una forma buena y otra mala: decorad hasta que estéis satisfechos con el resultado. Horneamos según las instrucciones del fabricante.   

There´s no good or wrong way , decorate til you feel the piece is good for you.

Una vez horneado, aplicamos óleo en todas las muescas asegurándonos de que entra en todas y retiramos el exceso con un papel.

Once it is cold, apply oil paint  and use a baby wipe to clean the excess.

   

 Podemos dar una primera pasada con la lija, ahora que todavía el óleo está húmedo. En la foto vemos a la derecha el corazón sin lijar y la otra pieza ya lijada.

We can sand the piece while the paint is still wet. The left one before sanding and the right one after.

Rellenamos los agujeros que habíamos dejado (en mi caso en forma de rombo, cuadrado y corazones) apretando desde la trasera con cuidado. La idea no es rellenar completamente, sino dejar que  la arcilla pase como si fuera una pequeña burbuja. Para los agujeros más grandes podemos usar una pequeña bolita de arcilla, para los más pequeños nos valdrá con una lámina. Horneamos de nuevo según instrucciones del fabricante.

Refill the holes with clay, do it from the back carefully. The idea is not refill complety, is to leave the clay through the hole like a bubble. For the big holes we are going to use an small ball of clay, for the little ones will be right with a sheet. Bake again.

 Una vez que tengamos las piezas completamente frías, lijamos el exceso de óleo hasta que esté a nuestro gusto, cuanto más lijemos, más volveremos al color hueso original, pero también iremos perdiendo parte del dibujo puesto que nuestras marcas eran muy suaves. 

Once the pieces are cold, I sand the oil excess til I like the result, as more we sand more "clean" colour we have, but less marks we´ll have. Balancing is the key..

Ponemos el broche, la trasera, texturizamos, añadimos cualquier detalle que queramos. Yo he puesto una lámina de murrina con mi firma, y cocemos de nuevo.

Set the brooch, the back sheet, apply a texture and add any other thing we want, as our sign or a cane or whatever. Bake again.

A mí me gusta darle otra pasada con lijas al agua, esta vez subiendo el número y luego pulir, porque le da un poquito de brillo que contrasta con el mate del óleo y todas las texturas que hemos hecho a las piezas.

II  like sanding again under running water, raising number grit and then use a buffing will, because I get a soft touch and a little glow that contrast with the oil paint and the textures on the surface.
